DELE Exam Structure: What You Will Be Tested On
Every DELE level tests four language skills: Reading Comprehension (Comprensión de lectura), Listening Comprehension (Comprensión auditiva), Written Expression (Expresión e interacción escritas), and Oral Expression (Expresión e interacción orales). These are split into two groups — Reading and Writing form Group 1, Listening and Speaking form Group 2.
You must pass both groups to receive your certificate. Crucially, if you pass one group and fail the other, you can retake only the failed group in the next session within two years. This makes strategic preparation important — identify your weakest skill early and allocate more time to it.
Level-by-Level Guide: What Each DELE Proves
DELE A2 — Elementary
A2 proves you can communicate in simple, routine tasks and describe your immediate environment. It is the entry-level DELE and a strong starting point for students. A2 is required by some university exchange programmes and demonstrates genuine commitment to the language.
DELE B1 — Intermediate
B1 is the most popular DELE level globally. It certifies you can manage most travel situations in a Spanish-speaking country, discuss familiar topics fluently, and produce simple connected text. B1 is required for some work visas and many university language requirements.
DELE B2 — Upper Intermediate
B2 opens professional doors. It proves you can interact spontaneously with native speakers, produce clear detailed text on a wide range of subjects, and defend positions in discussion. Many employers in Spain and Latin America list B2 as a minimum requirement.
DELE C1 — Advanced
C1 is the advanced professional standard. It proves fluent, spontaneous communication, flexible language use for social, academic and professional purposes. C1 is required for academic study at Spanish universities and high-level professional roles.

DELE Preparation Tips That Make a Real Difference
Use official Instituto Cervantes practice materials. These are published on their website for every level and are the most accurate reflection of actual exam difficulty. Use them from the start, not just in the final weeks.
Practise writing under timed conditions from day one. Many candidates know the grammar but fail to finish tasks in time. DELE writing tasks require structured paragraphs with introduction, development and conclusion. Timed practice is essential.
Prepare specifically for the speaking exam. The DELE oral component involves responding to a visual stimulus and a structured conversation with an examiner — very different from casual chat. Mock speaking exams with a qualified tutor who knows the DELE format are crucial preparation.
Train your ears across multiple accents. DELE listening tasks feature speakers from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and other countries. Exposure to different accents through podcasts and YouTube from early in your preparation is essential.

DELE exams in India are administered through Instituto Cervantes examination centres. Cities with centres include New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Pune. Exam sessions typically run in April/May and November each year, with registration opening 2–3 months in advance. Register directly through the Instituto Cervantes website or authorised examination centres.
Ensure you register for the correct level. Many candidates are tempted to jump a level — resist this unless your preparation clearly supports it. A B1 pass is more valuable than a B2 fail.
