Build Japanese vocabulary fast with proven strategies. Learn the most effective ways to memorise and retain Japanese words as an Indian learner.
Building Japanese vocabulary is unlike any other language for Indian learners — you are learning not just new words but also new scripts. However, once you have Hiragana and Katakana, vocabulary building follows the same principles that work in any language.
N5 level: ~800 words. N4 level: ~1,500 words. N3 level: ~3,000 words. N2 level: ~6,000 words. N1 level: ~10,000 words. The encouraging news is that N5-N4 vocabulary (1,500 words) covers most everyday conversational Japanese. And Katakana loanwords are bonus vocabulary you already know — 'terebi', 'kompyuuta', 'aisu kuriimu'.
Thousands of Japanese words are borrowed from English and other languages, written in Katakana. If you know English, you already know hundreds of Japanese words: resutoran (restaurant), basu (bus), hoteru (hotel), depato (department store), eakon (air conditioner), suupaa (supermarket). Learning to read Katakana gives you this vocabulary for free.
Anki flashcard app with Japanese vocabulary decks is the gold standard. Review new words after 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks. This matches the forgetting curve and means you review words exactly when you are about to forget them. 15-20 new words per day reviewed with Anki is sustainable and highly effective.
Don't separate vocabulary and Kanji learning. When you learn the word 'nihon' (Japan), learn it with its Kanji (日本). When you learn 'taberu' (to eat), connect it to the Kanji 食. Learning vocabulary and its written form together from the beginning saves you from having to relearn everything later.
Some Japanese words have Sanskrit roots due to Buddhism's spread through Asia: Japanese 'tera' (temple) relates to Sanskrit 'sthala' (place). 'Zen' comes from Sanskrit 'dhyana' (meditation). 'Futon' may relate to Sanskrit roots. Recognising these connections makes certain vocabulary more memorable for Indian learners.
